Welcome to the SSSA site!
The Silver Star Soaring Association was
formed in 1999 to promote the sport of Gliding in the central Okanagan. The members of the Silver Star Soaring
Association fly high performance sailplanes from our base at the municipal
airport in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada; halfway between Vancouver and
Calgary. By sharing our experiences and operating costs, we enjoy the most
rewarding and affordable form of flight possible. Our soaring season starts in
April and extends to the end of October.
As the summers are hot and
dry, the soaring conditions can be spectacular with blue thermals to 9,500 ft
and cloud bases to 11,000 ft. Soaring in ridge lift can occur within two miles
of the airport and wave conditions are sometimes seen overhead.
We enjoy a spectacular view
over the famous Okanagan Lake, Kalamalka Lake, and Swan Lake, just name a few. Thirty miles north of us
lies Salmon Arm and the same distance to the south you will find Kelowna, the business hub for the Interior of
British Columbia. To the east you can see the snow covered 7,000 ft.
high peaks of the Monashee Mountain
Range and to the west, the peaks of the Cascade Range..
We are active at the
Vernon airport most weekends and welcome visitors.
For an introduction to
soaring, don't miss the video called "Discover Gliders" which we have
supplied to the Okanagan Regional Library.
